The X boat is 16ft long with 2 sails and 1 skipper, 1 crew. This boat is unique to the midwest and is raced in Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa. The skipper of the boat owns or rents and is able to sail to age 16 (turn 16 in the calendar year). The skipper generally picks a crew that has some opti experience (around 9-11 years old). After 1 or 2 seasons of crewing, the natural progression is to start skipping.
We encourage crews to sail an Opti prior to and while crewing on an X to build skippering skills.
These kids are highly competitive and travel to many regattas throughout the summer. Classes are 4 days of the week, and a Wednesday race series as well as a weekend/holiday series. Skippers must provide their own X boat and have a designated crew at the beginning of the season.
One rental may be available through the club and the sailing school director can assist with finding a crew. Junior ($75) or family membership (see membership page) is required for skippers. Club-sponsored races are Wednesday, Saturday, and holidays ($110).
Classes start June 12 to July 27, with races extending to Labor Day
Skipper $425
Crew $350
The 420 class is designed for teens going into 8th grade up to 18 years of age that want to race for their local High School and become part of the Milwaukee Youth Sailing Team. The governing body is MISSA see https://missa.hssailing.org/.
Participating local schools come together on Pewaukee Lake in the fall and spring for practice. Our 420 boats are used for the program.
This class is a great way for teens to try-it out or improve their skills. Students will spend lots of time on the water taking turns between steering and crewing, become familiar with sailing terminology and learn the rules that govern sailing. Oh and did we mention socializing and meeting new friends! Great way to get them off their electronics and on the water! Class $225 boat included
